Who We Are

Deep Roots Landscape Design is the creation of Deep Roots Garden Center owner, Ramsay Harik. A Master Gardener and Native Plant Steward with decades of landscaping experience, Ramsay believes passionately in the power of native plants to help heal the planet, and heal ourselves. Ramsay grew up here in Bloomington and has been gardening here since his days at Hilltop, so he knows from clay! He also knows from deer: the creator of the patented Deer Cage, Ramsay designs with a clear eye to minimizing deer and rabbit damage.

Project manager Liam Kelly brings a prodigious knowledge of plants and a deep commitment to eco-friendly gardening. The garden Liam grew up in was run through with natives from the surrounding white pine/oak forests and acid bogs of rural Rhode Island - pink lady slipper orchids, threadlike creeping blackberries, savory black raspberries, crisp Indian cucumber root, shining orange Turk’s cap lilies, lowbush blueberries, woodland strawberries, hazelnuts. For Liam, the aesthetic and gustatory bounty of a healthy native ecosystem is a wonder to behold. This wonder has guided Liam’s work in dreaming up and designing landscapes where all of its inhabitants - human and every other - are participants in a healthy relationship with the land together. Before moving to Bloomington, Liam worked at Restoring Roots Cooperative in Boston, a worker-owned landscaping cooperative committed to connecting people with the land they live on and creating eco-friendly garden spaces. With a permaculture background and a passion for “the right plant in the right place,” Liam is helping take Deep Roots to a whole new level.

Ramsay, Liam, and Josh can turn your yard into the beautiful nature habitat it longs to become—and have fun doing it. We love this work and we think you’ll find our enthusiasm infectious!
